Becoming a Correctional Officer in North Carolina

Correctional officers in North Carolina work in many county, federal, and state incarceration and administration facilities. While many of these facilities are state-run, there is a trend toward third-party management of all aspects of the facility. County jails are used for pre-sentence holding and short-term sentencing, whereas state facilities have a range of incarceration options for the approximate 38,000 inmates across the state. Some, like the Abemarle Correctional Institute and the Lumberton Correctional Institute are medium security facilities whereas the Alexander Correctional Institute and the North Carolina Correctional Institution for Women have more security measures in place. Regardless, North Carolina's state Department of Corrections is committed to increasing public safety, reducing costs, and developing satisfactory transitions to life post-incarceration. Due to the evolving needs of the industry, BLS.gov forecasts that staffing over the next 10 years is poised to grow at a steady rate - in North Carolina this means that there will be approximately 24,966 positions up from the current 23,778. BLS is not able to forecast staffing needs for retirement and attrition, or career advancements, which means there is even more opportunity in the field than available data can show. Read on to discover more about this expanding career field below.

  • Proof of age (20+) and U.S. citizenship
  • Valid North Carolina driver's license

  • Proof of high school diploma or GED, or greater
  • Veterans to provide proof of honorable discharge (DD-214)
  • Negative drug test
  • Be eligible for Department of Corrections certification
  • Be eligible to meet ongoing departmental testing and standards

With proof of these preliminary qualifications accompanying a complete application form for DOC employment, candidates advance to the next round of qualifying assessments which include:

  • Fitness testing
  • Medical-physical assessment
  • Psychological assessment
  • Extensive personal, professional, and criminal background check

Should all assessments prove that a candidate is a good match for the corrections officer role, he or she is scheduled for training at North Carolina's Correctional Officer Academy, located at a state facility. This paid training course teaches practical skills and policies that aid the new hire in their prospective roles. Candidates should note that the academy training must be completed successfully in order to be considered for permanent employment.
